My Sewing Machines & Why I Chose Them

I’m going to get right into it..

I have several sewing machines, and two sergers.

My first machine is a late model Singer. It’s all plastic and lightweight. It gets the job done, but does not do any heavy duty sewing. I rarely use it.

My next machine is another all plastic and lightweight Singer that I found in a thrift store. It was $20, so I grabbed it. I don’t use it much, and it doesn’t sew heavy duty. It’s just another sewing machine I bought, because I’m weak.

Then there’s my Sears Kenmore 1940 vintage machine. It’s heavy AND heavy duty. It’s all metal, and it sews through layers of denim. I have a hair salon with a loft that I am using for a ‘while at work’ sewing studio. This machine is an absolute BEAST, and one of the best machines I own.

Next up is my vintage Montgomery Wards 7 Jewel zig-zag sewing machine. This one caught my eye with its beautiful color. This vintage machine is heavy duty, as it will sew through several layers of denim, and some leathers. I purchased this one at a thrift store for under $25, and put all my other machines away just to use this one exclusively.

But then…. I went to a tag-sale and the owner of the home was deeply invested in all Pfaff sewing machines and sergers. When I arrived, there were several Pfaffs, and every and all accessories. Within no time there was only one left. It was a Pfaff Creative 1371. I GOT IT for less than $100! Not only is it heavy duty, it embroiders as well. It’s so easy to change the stitches, reverse, and ‘tie off’ the end of seams.

Needless to say, I’m exclusively using the Pfaff only AND looking at purchasing a creative 1471.

I HAD a vintage Pfaff 1209, but it was stolen.

By now you may be thinking that I have a lot of vintage machines; I do. Solely because to me, they are built a whole lot sturdier than the modern machines.

To me, vintage, made in Germany, or made in Japan sewing machines are time capsules. Lasting for YEARS-on-end with proper maintenance. Today’s machines are made of plastic, and are lightweight. The next time you’re in a thrift store or at an estate sale, look for your next machine!
